Blair hints at two-casino-solution for north-west
09/05/2007
The prime minister has told the House of Commons that if there was enough money then both Manchester and Blackpool would get a supercasino.
Tony Blair said that the government hopes to propose a solution to the deadlock between both houses of parliament.
At the end of March, the Lords voted against the government's all-or-nothing casino package, despite the fact that approval was won in the Commons.
It was only the third time since the second world war that the upper house blocked a statutory instrument supported by the elected chamber.
Mr Blair said: "Personally I have never seen the reason why we should have Blackpool and Manchester pitted against each other.
"If the investment is there and able to be done, let's do both of them."
The Lords defeat means that the government cannot reintroduce the order in its existing form.
