Blears joins protest over NHS reform at Hope
28/12/2006
Local MP and chair of the Labour Party Hazel Blears is protesting against a partial closure at Hope Hospital in Salford.
Despite being a cabinet member of a government determined to reform the NHS, Ms Blears has said that the closure and relocation of Hope's maternity unit is the "wrong thing to do".
She joined fellow protestors in a demonstration outside the hospital on Wednesday, the BBC has reported.
A spokesman said that Ms Blears is petitioning Patricia Hewitt, the health secretary, to prevent the closure.
The Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts opted to shut the maternity units at Hope as part of a wider review of services across Greater Manchester.
Unison branch secretary Denise Bradshaw recently told the Salford Advertiser that residents and patients who are upset about the decision should "protest against it to try to get it overturned".
