Bolton scientists 'helping protect police and armed forces'
05/07/2007
Scientific researchers in Bolton are helping to protect the armed forces and police service by developing the next generation of armoured vest.
A prototype of the flak jackets being perfected at the University of Bolton has already been tested and found effective by the US military, the Evening News reports.
Heading up the research team at the institution Professor Subhash Anand, of the Centre for Materials Research and Innovation (CRMI), comments: "In the US army tests, our prototype stopped all four bullets. The bullets become lodged in the protective clothing which is very good - it also means they are not ricocheting off and potentially injuring someone else."
The new design is intended to improve on previous weaknesses in body armour, for instance by moulding to fit the sides of the body as well as the back and chest.
CRMI is dedicated to fostering links between research at the university with other academic institutions and industry to push forward innovation in the field.
