03/05/2007
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of a 12-year-old girl who was shot dead on a council estate in Gorton.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with the murder of Kamilah Peniston, as well as the possession of a firearm and ammunition. He will appear before Manchester City Magistrates' Court today.
He is also accused of possessing a Section One firearm, which is a particularly powerful class of weapon, and Section One ammunition.
Kamilah was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary with a single gunshot wound to the head after paramedics and police were called to her home in Wembley Road at 19:30 BST on Monday.
She underwent surgery but died the following day after being transferred to Pendlebury Children's hospital in Salford.
A handgun converted to fire live ammunition was found at the house by Greater Manchester Police officers.
A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman stated: "A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder, possession of a Section One firearm and possession of Section One ammunition following an incident in Gorton on Monday."
Superintendent John O'Hare has urged anyone who has any information about people selling, converting or possessing guns to alert police immediately.
