Boy in court for throwing sausage
23/08/2007
A boy in Manchester has been the focus of the national media after he was taken to court for throwing a cocktail sausage.
The 12-year-old was accused of throwing the sausage at a 74-year-old man in south Manchester and was subsequently hauled up before a judge at Manchester youth court.
However, the judge questioned the decision to prosecute the boy who has denied the charge.
District judge Tim Devas said: "I was brought up in the era of Just William. You may not remember it, but this incident sounds similar.
"If he has done what was suggested, it is very bad behaviour. But is it in the public interest to prosecute a 12-year-old boy who threw a sausage?"
But the GMP said they had to act because the boy had already been issued with three reprimands.
"The officer's decision to charge was completely in line with standard procedure and took all available information into consideration," a spokesperson said.
The police and Crown Prosecution Service are now reviewing the prosecution, which has is believed to have cost £2,000.
