Breast cancer radiologist 'personally to blame' for errors
02/02/2007
An NHS report has confirmed that a consultant radiologist was to blame for misreading the breast cancer scan results of 28 women in Greater Manchester and has criticised procedures at Trafford NHS Trust.
Doctor Amjad Husien's incorrect all-clear diagnoses resulted in a review of almost 2,500 mammograms at Trafford General Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital.
A total of 176 women were recalled and retested after the mistakes were realised in April 2005.
The report found that Mr Husien, who is now the subject of a General Medical Council investigation, did not have colleagues to double or triple-check his findings.
According to the BBC, the author of the report, Professor Mark Baker, said: "Some indicators suggest that he made extraordinary errors and used extravagant suggestions for the cause of image findings.
"I conclude that the precipitating cause of the misreading of the mammograms was the personal failure of a radiologist."
One of the women who received a wrong diagnosis has now died from the disease, while 18 others have been told their chances of surviving are "significantly" worsened.
