Burns research centre opens in Manchester
14/09/2007
A research centre has opened in Manchester dedicated to helping burns survivors and those who have disfiguring conditions.
Based at Manchester Universality, the Healing Foundation Centre was opened by Simon Weston, a Falklands war veteran and burns survivor.
The centre, a £10 million initiative between the university and the Healing Foundation charity, will focus on how some animals are able to repair wounds without scars and regenerate amputated limbs.
Researchers believe that they will be able to use this knowledge to benefit future human survivors of burns, trauma, congenital deformity or disease.
Mr Weston he is proud to be involved at the start of "such an exciting initiative". He said the partnership between the university and the Healing Foundation will hopefully bring "remarkable improvements" to patients.
The Healing Foundation has previously said there is "enormous scope" for enhanced collaboration, education and awareness.
More than 14,000 people are annually admitted to British hospitals with serious burns and 11,000 amputations are carried out each year.
