Burnt city buildings 'may be demolished'
01/05/2007
The Manchester city centre buildings that were ravaged by flames yesterday may have to have to be partially demolished before it can be determined if anyone was inside, fire chiefs have said.
Firefighters were called at 05:55 BST to tackle a "well-established" fire in a multi-story commercial property on the junction of Dale Street and Lever Street, which later spread to neighbouring buildings.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area because of the partial closure of some of the surrounding streets.
Paul Duggan, from Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, told the BBC: "This has been a large-scale incident but we now only need 30 firefighters to dampen down the buildings."
"Until the structural survey confirms that it is safe to enter the buildings we cannot check to see if anyone is still inside."
More than 120 firefighters worked to quell yesterday's fire which was widely reported in the national media.
