Bury confirms nuclear-free stance
22/12/2006
Bury Council has confirmed its commitment to the Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA) campaign.
A number of councillors in Bury voted for the motion to remain in the NFLA because of the risks and expense associated with nuclear power; investment should be geared towards renewable energy, they said.
Liberal Democrat councillor Vic D'Albert said that nuclear power "is the biggest and most expensive white elephant on the planet".
He added: "And yet the government is offering incentives to councils to volunteer to have a nuclear waste site, which is utterly grotesque."
However, some councillors have conceded that nuclear power should not be ruled out all together, especially if there is no other way of tackling global warming, the Bury Times has reported.
But despite the 'green' rhetoric from Tory leader David Cameron, the Conservatives voted against the motion.
Councillor Roger Brown said: "With windmills and solar panels, the amount of energy they generate and the cost of installing them is uneconomic."
Other local members of the NFLA include the Greater Manchester Fire & Civil Defence Authority and Manchester City Council.
