Bury launches case review of Geeling death
18/01/2007
A serious case review is underway in Bury to assess the implications of the murder of 11-year-old Joe Geeling.
The review, which was ordered by the Bury Safeguarding Children Board, has invited Joe's parents and the family of killer Michael Hamer, who is aged 15, to participate in the inquiry.
Earlier in the week, judges postponed a decision on whether to increase the minimum 12-year sentence given to Joe's killer.
Councillor Maggie Gibb, executive member for young people, said: "The purpose of a serious case review is not to point the finger or try to place blame onto a particular organisation.
"It is to find out if there are ways to improve practice and so reduce the likelihood of a death like this happening again."
The body of Joe, a cystic fibrosis sufferer, was dumped in a park in Bury after he was battered and stabbed in March last year.
