C-charge debate heats up on Facebook
13/10/2008
The battle for the yes or no vote for the proposed congestion charges in Manchester has spilled onto Facebook.
The social networking site has been inundated with new groups, mostly to scrap the charge, with the largest - Against the Congestion Charge in Manchester - recorded as having 12,991 members.
Alternatively, I *support* Congestion Charging in Manchester has 1,430 members.
Founder and resident Kevin Peel told Crains Manchester Business: "We wanted to create a place on Facebook where ordinary people could find out the facts for themselves and make up their own minds."
A referendum on whether Manchester should introduce two charges to drivers - one for entering the M60 zone and another for driving in the inner city - is looming with the due date in December.
Opponents to the wider M60 zone even have a Facebook site No To Zone Two of the Manchester Congestion Charge, which the site says will cut off residents, with 129 members.
