C-charge inner ring plans unveiled
20/06/2008
Plans for the inner ring of the proposed congestion charge which could be in force by 2013 have been unveiled by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (Agma).
The perimeter of the inner ring runs along Queens Road to the north, Alan Turing Way to the east, Trafford Road and Fredrick Road to the east and either Wilbraham Road or Hathersage Road to the south, reports the BBC.
There are also plans for an outer ring that traces the orbital M60, which passes through eight of the ten Greater Manchester boroughs.
Sir Richard Leese, deputy leader of the Agma, told the broadcaster: "The publication of the inner ring will allow people to calculate whether or not they will pay a charge.
"We expect that only 20 per cent of peak time drivers will actually pay any charge at all as they will not cross a ring in the direction of congestion."
A public consultation on the congestion charge will be conducted sometime this summer.
Several businesses, including Bruntwood, Urban Splash, Ask Developments, Piccadilly Partnership and City South Partnership, have formed an alliance called United City to lobby in support of the congestion charge.
