Cameron upbeat about north-west vote
24/04/2008
Conservative leader David Cameron is confident that his party can make further inroads in the north-west in the upcoming local elections.
He denied claims from some quarters that the Tories face an uphill struggle to garner widespread support in Greater Manchester and the north of England.
"Last year we made some real progress in the north of England and actually in the north-west we now control more authorities than the Labour Party," he told the BBC.
The Tory leader said that in Salford, the Conservatives had gone from a situation where they had no councillors at all to being the official opposition.
He conceded that the Tories had been absent from north-west cities "for too long", but remarked that the party is "making very good progress".
"We can do it and we're making a very steady recovery," Mr Cameron added.
Mr Cameron was in Salford on Monday to lend support to local party activists. He was also in the city last month to have his picture taken outside the Salford Lads' Club, which was made famous by Manchester band The Smiths.
