Campaign boost to save Trafford Town Hall
26/01/2007
Trafford Town Hall, which is at the centre of a land redevelopment row, has been saved – at least for now.
The town hall's neighbour, Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC), wants to demolish the council's headquarters and redevelop the site.
However, a steering committee has opposed the scheme, which will go before the council for an ultimate decision.
Council leader Susan Williams said she is determined "to preserve the architectural and historical integrity of the original town hall for the people of the borough".
Although the 1930s town hall seems to have been temporarily saved, it is uncertain whether it can continue to accommodate the council. It has been calculated that the building requires £6 million of refurbishment.
Campaigners are hoping to ensure the future of the building by getting it Grade II listed.
A spokesman from the LCCC told the BBC that the town hall land "isn't a deal breaker" and the club "might still be able to use the land with the town hall building on it".
