Caribbean sounds to fill Manchester park
24/07/2006
All are welcome at next month's Manchester's Caribbean Carnival because that is the subject of this year's event.
Street Bacchanal is the theme of the third annual carnival, which is a West Indian phrase for "everyone can join in".
Held at Alexander Park, Moss Side, on August 19th and August 20th, the event involves a procession of steel bands and floats, before a party in the park.
A variety of West Indian reggae performers will be present, as well as calypso band The Mighty Jamma.
Councillor Mark Hackett, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure said: "The Caribbean Carnival of Manchester is the biggest celebration of Caribbean culture in the north-west and a wonderful example of a fun community event.
"Manchester is very proud of its cultural diversity and the carnival gives local people and visitors the chance to join in the festival fun."
Last year's carnival, under the themes of diversity and harmony, included Caribbean youth dance workshops, which will also be present this year.
