Chancellor visits east Manchester

03/06/2008

Chancellor Alistair Darling was in Manchester yesterday to see the rapid regeneration of the city's east side.

He visited Ancoats to see the transformation of old mills into new apartments and commercial space, and checked out the new and cutting-edge Ancoats Clinic, which cost £6.5 million.

The chancellor also paid a visit to Cotton Field eco-park at New Islington, which is where thousands homes are being built around a lake.

Robert Hough, chairman of urban regeneration company New East Manchester, said: "We are improving the housing, economic, educational and social well-being of the eastern parts of the city.

"We will continue working hard to bring about further major improvements, giving people ever-increasing reasons to be proud of east Manchester."

The regeneration of east Manchester has helped to reverse the area's 13 per cent population decline, which took place in the 1990s following the collapse of manufacturing.
