Chinese New Year goes off with a bang
19/02/2007
Thousands of people lined the streets of Manchester and Liverpool yesterday to celebrate the Chinese New Year – the year of the pig.
In Manchester, following the dragon dance, the dragon parade travelled from Albert Square to Chinatown, where revellers gathered for folk dancing and oriental music.
There were also Kung Fu displays, street vendors selling Chinese crafts, toys and oriental food, and fairground rides.
Councillor Mark Hackett, Manchester City Council's executive member for culture and leisure, said: "Manchester's Chinese New Year celebration never fails to attract a large crowd.
"It's a special day for Manchester's Chinese community and will draw in thousands of visitors to the city centre."
The celebrations ended with a firework finale featuring a new display using contemporary fireworks, although unofficial celebrations continued into the night.
2007 is the year of the golden pig and happens once every 60 years. It is supposed to bring good luck and posterity, especially to babies born during the year.
