City centre Metrolink services to double
14/07/2008
The number of trams running through Manchester city centre will double from next spring, it has been announced.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) is supervising a £575 million expansion of the Metrolink network to Oldham, Rochdale, Droylsden and Chorlton.
The vast majority of stops in central Manchester will have trams calling at them at least every three minutes during the day when the new routes open.
Matt Colledge, chair of the GMPTA, said: "One of the biggest benefits of Metrolink is that it provides a frequent service, making it more convenient."
Last month, it was confirmed that 28 trams have been ordered to run on the new lines.
Transport chiefs are planning alternative bus services along the Rochdale and Oldham line while construction work takes place.
The GMPTA recently said it expects the new trams to be busy with more than 90,000 journeys being taken on Metrolink every day.
