City launches investigation into Uefa big screen failure

19/05/2008

Manchester city council has launched a full inquiry into the failure of the big screen in Piccadilly that sparked rioting in the city last Wednesday.

Lightmedia Display of Bradford, which was responsible for the big TVs in three fan zones, attributed the screen failure in Piccadilly to a technical signalling problem.

"We are extremely sorry and we fully recognise what a blow this was to the thousands of fans hoping to watch the match," said managing director Eddie Smith.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese said the "vast majority" of Rangers fans spent a peaceful evening in Manchester centre "in a spirit of friendship and respect".

He confirmed there can be no big screen showing of the Champions League final this Wednesday.

Following last week's match between Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg, more than 200 street cleaning staff and 50 council office workers collected 250 tons of rubbish from Manchester's streets.
