City says goodbye to 'Mr Manchester'
20/08/2007
The funeral of Salford-born music mogul and broadcaster Tony Wilson has taken place this afternoon (August 20th).
A private service was held at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, popularly known as the Hidden Gem, in central Manchester.
As well as family and friends, music and television personalities - including Richard Madelely and Shaun Ryder - attended the service.
Fans, many of whom gathered outside the church to pay their respects, have been asked to send flowers or make a donation to Christie's Hospital.
Known in the media world as Mr Manchester, Wilson died of a heart attack brought about by ongoing kidney cancer just over a week ago.
He will be remembered for his contributions to popular music and for his relentless promotion of the city-region.
Wilson was behind the creation of Factory Records that launched the careers of the Happy Mondays, New Order and Joy Division.
