Clayton's Philips Park celebrates facelift
21/05/2007
An event was held over the weekend to mark the completion of a £430,000 makeover for 31-acre Philips Park in Clayton, near the City of Manchester Stadium.
Local councillors and local children came together to celebrate the rejuvenation of the park, which included the planting of hundreds of flower bulbs to augment the historic tulip valley and wildflower meadow.
Repairs to the grade II-listed boundary wall, the installation of new railings, the upgrading of entrances and the creation of a new play area for older children were also undertaken.
"Improving the quality of the region's public spaces plays an important part in regeneration," Damien Bourke, spokesman for the North West Development Agency, which helped to fund the facelift.
He went on to say that this includes enhancing the quality of life for local people, "making east Manchester a better place to live and providing an incentive for investment into the local economy".
Philips Park, which was awarded Green Flag status by the Civic Trust two years ago, opened in 1846 as one of the world's first municipal parks.
