Congestion charge cash given to Manchester

17/01/2008

An additional £1.5 million for Greater Manchester's congestion charge bid will be provided by the government, it has been announced.

Transport minister Rose Winterton told the House of Commons that the extra funding will enable Manchester to drive forward proposals for a road pricing scheme.

But while the government is committed to working closely with Manchester, she said there is "no guarantee" that the city-region's Transport Innovation Fund bid will be successful.

However, if the government does approve the bid, it will grant £1.2 billion, plus a further £1.8 billion in loans to be repaid with congestion charge revenues.

"This award means that these areas can continue to take forward proposals for improved public transport including local road pricing schemes," said Ms Winterton.

Last year, it was reported that Manchester had been looking to northern Europe for transport improvement ideas.

For example, Stockholm undertook public transport improvements before levying a £4.50 for vehicles to drive in and out of the city during business hours.
