Council aims for tree recycling record
03/01/2008
Manchester residents looking to dispose of their used Christmas trees in an eco-friendly way might want to help the city council break its tree recycling record.
Officials are hoping to collect more than 96.38 tonnes of trees this month - which is the amount gathered together for recycling at the beginning of last year.
Homeowners can drop off their trees at parks across Manchester between January 4th and 13th from 09:30 to 15:30 GMT.
Participating parks include Alexandra Park, Boggart Hole Clough, Debdale Park, Fog Lane Park, Heaton Park, Platt Fields Park and Wythenshawe Park, with a facility also available at Manchester City Football Club.
Others can ring the Environment On Call team until January 18th to arrange a doorstep tree pickup.
"Manchester residents have already shown their commitment to having a green Christmas," commented councillor Neil Swannick.
"There are plenty of options for people who want to dispose of their tree in an environmentally-friendly [way] and I'd encourage them to help us make it a record-breaking start to 2008."
Last month, the council advised local residents on ways to make their Christmas eco-friendly, such as saving and reusing wrapping paper and turning vegetable waste into compost.
