Council criticises Britain's hardest bouncer contest
23/06/2008
A Manchester-held reality TV competition to find Britain's toughest bouncer has been condemned by the city council.
Staged by KO Promotions, the night will see 16 bouncers - or nightclub doormen - fight each other, for the title and £10,000 in prize money, possibly at The Ritz nightclub.
Pat Karney, spokesman for the city council, told the BBC that the contest and TV show was "provocative" as the winner would become a target or tourist attraction.
"You're going to get some of the idiots with too much alcohol down them saying, 'I hear you're the hardest doorman in Britain - show me'."
But Chris Bacon, a spokesman for KO Promotions, said the programme will show "normal hard-working guys" who enjoy boxing when they are not minding the entrances to nightclubs and pubs.
The fight night has not yet been confirmed but it is thought that ringside seats will cost around £45, with standard seats priced at £35.
Bouncers in England and Wales are required by the Security Industry Association, which regulates the door staff industry, to have completed training courses on conflict management.
