Council reflects on halfway point of tidy-up scheme
09/04/2008
Manchester city council has highlighted some of the positive steps that have been taken during the first 50 days of this year's 100 Days campaign to clean up the city's streets.
An annual event since 2004, the initiative has seen thousands of Manchester people become involved in trying to make their city a greener place to reside.
So far in 2008, there have been more than 130 events organised across the city - all designed to tidy up street mess. According to the council, there are "many more" to come in the next 50 days.
Councillor Eddy Newman, executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "Since we launched the campaign ... the people of Manchester have really taken it to their heart."
He added that people have got involved in the programme in a number of different ways - be it via clean-up operations or offering views on the city's recycling services.
"The campaign is making a genuine difference to people's lives," Mr Newman continued.
Earlier this month, the council reported that over 800 vehicles - the majority of them untaxed - were removed from Manchester's streets in 2007 and recycled.
