Councillor slams police after officer's death
11/06/2008
A councillor in whose ward a police officer was killed during a training exercise using live ammunition has spoken of his anger.
Damien O'Connor told the BBC he is "appalled" that local residents were not made aware that the training facility used real bullets.
He made his comments after Pc Ian Terry, 32, was killed after being shot by a colleague's gun in a training exercise in Newton Heath.
"I am absolutely appalled that live ammunition has been used here," he stated.
"It is very, very close to the local community and none of the local councillors, as far as I am aware, has been told that they were using this live ammunition."
Mr O'Connor, a Liberal Democrat, said that if the Greater Manchester Police were going to use live ammunition, they should have consulted local councillors.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the incident.
