Creative boost for city's Northern Quarter

15/07/2008

Manchester city council has partnered with developer Argent to attract creative industries to the city's Northern Quarter.

A 76,000 sq ft development in Stevenson Square known as The Hive will provide a unique workspace for the creative industry and attract inward investment, according to the council.

By 2013, it is hoped that The Hive scheme will have delivered 440 full-time jobs, boosting the city's economy by £9.3 million every year.

City council leader Sir Richard Leese said the Northern Quarter has become a strong brand in its own right.

"We are determined to preserve that character while making the most of the area's creative, independent spirit," he added.

Situated between Piccadilly and Ancoats, the Northern Quarter is home to a number of creative agencies, fashion designers, boutiques and art galleries.

Earlier this year, the Nexus art cafe opened on Dale Street and is a place where artists, musicians and other creative types regularly meet.
