Creole history tours set up in Manchester
06/09/2007
Mancunians are being invited to learn more about their city's Creole and black influences.
A number of black history trails are being set up across the city centre and members of the public are being invited to participate in or more of the three guided walks.
The history tours, which are part of an international conference about Creole culture, will take place on September 6th, 7th and 8th.
Conference organiser Dr Encarnacion Gutierrez Rodriguez said: "So many people are unaware of the importance of Manchester to the history of Creole culture.
"Louis Armstrong visited Manchester several times including a 1956 visit when arriving by what he famously described as a Sharrabang - to you and me a coach."
Other important figures that had connections with Manchester included Haitian resistance leader Toussaint l'Ouverture, who led Haiti's black population into victory over white colonisers in 1797.
The University of Manchester's School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures has more information on the conference and the guided walks.
