Decision imminent on Manchester Metrolink
23/06/2006
News of Manchester's Metrolink expansion will be issued "fairly shortly", according to transport minister Dr Stephen Ladyman.
The decision over the construction of three extra lines across Greater Manchester will be made within the next month, Dr Ladyman told the BBC.
Plans involve the development of lines to Manchester Airport, Oldham and Ashton-under-Lyne and have been estimated to cost £900 million.
Previous statements from the government have indicated that it is not willing to spend more than £520 million, but the Greater Manchester Public Transport Authority has been working to increase this figure.
Dr Ladyman told the BBC: "The secretary of state and I are discussing the regional advice on the funding allocation and we are hoping to make our announcement before the summer recess."
Currently, the Manchester Metrolink runs to Altrincham, Bury and Eccles.
Old Trafford and Salford Quays are two of the destinations that the transport system can reach.
