Disability travel award for Manchester
06/11/2006
Manchester has won an award for its efforts in helping disabled people to travel independently around the region using public transport.
The Travel Training initiative, which aims to give disabled people the confidence to use buses, trains and trams to get out and about on their own, was honoured at the annual UK Bus Awards in London.
Funded by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA), the scheme provides personalised, long-term assistance to help disabled people familiarise themselves with public transport in their area so they can gain more independence.
Allen Brett, leader of Rochdale Council, said: "Travel is a part of everyday life and the ability to travel is something that most people take for granted. However, for some, travelling alone can be a real challenge.
"The Travel Training initiative helps people to make bus, train and tram journeys confidently, safely and by themselves. I'm delighted that it's received national recognition at the UK Bus Awards."
The GMPTA was established to assess the public transport needs of Greater Manchester and make policy decisions about public transport provision. It is made up of 33 councillors appointed by the ten district councils in the city-region.
