East Manchester urban centre approved
13/01/2008
One of the biggest regeneration schemes in the UK has been given the green light in Manchester.
The city council has approved the creation of Holt Town Waterfront in the east of Manchester, near Sport City.
Comprising 4,300 new homes to be built over the next 15 years, this new urban centre will also feature a new river valley park, amenities, leisure facilities and a new Metrolink tram stop.
The first homes will be available some time this year, according to Citibas, which is building the development.
David Shelton, managing director at Cibitas, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the city council's decision.
"Holt Town Waterfront is an ambitious project that will re-define urban family living in the UK - we hope this project becomes a flagship for the rest of the country."
East Manchester, which until recently was one of the most deprived areas in the country, has witnessed a number of development projects following the success of the Commonwealth Games in 2002.
It could also be home to the UK's first supercasino if given the go-ahead by the prime minister.
