Employment up in Salford
06/08/2008
There are 20,000 more people in work in Salford than at the start of the decade, a new report has shown.
According to the city council, Salford's employment rate of 72.8 per cent now exceeds the north-west average of 72.2 per cent.
It is also edging closer to the national average of 74.4 per cent.
Some 103,000 adults are now in employment and this has been attributed to economic growth and large-scale regeneration.
Councillor John Merry, leader of the city council, said that Salford has "well and truly turned the corner".
"We are not complacent, however, as there is still much to do. Tackling worklessness and raising aspirations remain amongst our key priorities," he added.
The creation of a new city centre in Greengate near Manchester Cathedral and the ongoing mediacity:uk project at the quays is also likely to boost jobs.
Meanwhile, separate figures show that Salford's population is likely to grow by an additional 5,400 by 2011, rising by another 18,000 by 2021.
