End of the road for Wheel of Manchester
30/05/2006
Manchester's Wheel will stop turning next week, as the city-centre attraction packs up for good.
The visitor attraction, which has been open since October 28th 2004, will spin for the last time on Thursday June 1st.
Situated in Exchange Square, the Wheel of Manchester is lit by thousands of lights and stands at 60 metres high, offering views across the whole city.
But from next week, the construction will cease run, because the location is going to be used to show World Cup football, when the competition kicks off on July 9th.
The 42-carriage wheel is similar to the London Eye, but is transportable.
It used to stand on the Champs Elysees in Paris, before being moved to the north-west of England.
A trip on the wheel lasts ten minutes and riders receive commentary pointing out local landmarks, such as the Urbis, Manchester Town Hall, the CIS tower, Old Trafford and the distant hills of the Peak district.
