England fans brave the Manchester weather
21/06/2006
Over 1,000 individuals braved the wet weather to watch England's final World Cup group game against Sweden at Castlefield Arena.
A BBC big screen was installed at the venue to allow the people of Manchester to watch the game together.
Nearly 6,000 tickets were not taken up, but the organisers of the event have indicated that they were pleased with the crowd.
Councillor Pat Karney told the BBC: "Obviously with the weather this is the maximum turnout you'll get in the city anywhere.
"But for all the kids who have come here, this is a very safe area and that is my top priority."
Last night's match finished 2-2, with Sweden scoring in the last minute to end England's 100 per cent record in the tournament so far.
However, goals from Joe Cole and Steven Gerrard ensured that England finished top of their group and will play Ecuador on Sunday.
