English fans praised for keeping the peace at Old Trafford
25/04/2007
Manchester United fans have been praised by police for their good behaviour during yesterday's match against AC Milan.
There had been security fears surrounding the match because United's most recent Champions league tie, against Roma two weeks ago, resulted in clashes with police, when hundreds of supporters were embroiled in the fights outside the stadium as rival fans hurled glass bottles at each other.
Last night, however, English fans were in joyous mood after Wayne Rooney snatched a 3-2 victory in the game's dying minutes.
The only minor incidents, according to the BBC, were the arrests of three men on suspicion public order offences and the discovery of a suspicious-looking bin bag, which was found to contain nothing but adult DVDs.
Before the game, Chief Superintendent Janette McCormick said she hoped there would be a carnival atmosphere and urged fans to make sure the game was "an enjoyable event for everyone who attends".
About 75,000 fans were at the Old Trafford ground, 2,800 of which were away supporters.
