Environmental experts to check new Metrolink lines
03/04/2008
Environmental experts are to inspect the routes of the new Metrolink lines next week to check for protected species, such as bats, and whether trees will need to be replaced.
Manchester transport bosses have arranged for environmental surveys to be carried out along the projected routes to Oldham, Rochdale, Droylsden, Chorlton and Salford Quays.
Later this year, specialists will report on air quality, noise pollution and drainage conditions.
Most of the surveys will take place during the night, although some inspections will take place at dawn and dusk in order to observe bat behaviour.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) boss Michael Renshaw said: "We'll be carrying out surveys from now until late autumn to help us prepare for the expansion of the Metrolink network.
"We need to have up-to-date information about the new Metrolink routes so that we know what to expect when work starts on building them."
On its website, the GMPTE said it takes its environmental responsibilities "very seriously" and that economic, social and environmental factors are considered to be very important when making decisions.
