Firemen suspended for 'dangerous prank'
17/08/2006
A Manchester fireman, who was recently caught on camera climbing into a tumble dryer as part of a dangerous prank, has been suspended.
Andy Bruce, aged 33, from Radcliffe, Bury has been suspended, along with three others, pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.
Mr Bruce, who has been a fireman for four years, got into the tumble dryer at Blackley fire station in Manchester and was caught on film being spun round inside it while his colleagues laughed in the background.
The film, which was captured on a mobile phone video, was then published on the internet but a copy of the footage was then sent to county fire officer Barry Dixon.
Tony Proctor, deputy county fire officer, told the BBC: "Following interviews with the four firefighters involved, due to the seriousness of the incident, the decision has been taken to suspend the firefighters pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing."
Steven Beckley, assistant county fire officer, said he was "horrified" by the act, while the incident was condemned as foolish and dangerous by other senior officers, who said the incident was bringing the fire service into disrepute.
Mr Bruce has apologised for his behaviour.
