First to run buses on Boxing Day
09/11/2007
A major public transport operator has said it will provide bus services across Manchester on Boxing Day.
First Manchester announced it would provide buses on Boxing Day, despite it being a bank holiday. Last year, it was the only main bus operator not to provide services on the day after Christmas.
It has also been announced by Manchester transport bosses that the Metrolink, which is run by First's rival Stagecoach, will be in operation until 01:45 GMT on New Year's Eve.
Metrolink services will also operate until 22.30 GMT on Christmas Eve and until 20:00 GMT on both Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
Alan Whitehead, chairman of the city transport network committee, said: "First was the only major bus operator not to provide services in Greater Manchester on Boxing Day last year. I'm pleased that it will run some services this year.
"We are keen to make it as easy as possible for people to be able to use public transport over the festive season."
Earlier this month, Manchester transport bosses announced that Metrolink fares will increase for the first time in over two years from Sunday November 18th.
