First woman mayor for Salford in two decades
18/05/2007
Councillor Val Burgoyne has become mayor of Salford and is the first woman to take up the position in the city for 22 years.
Salford born-and-bred, Ms Burgoyne has served on the housing and social services committee and has represented the city council at Association of Greater Manchester Authorities debates.
She was installed at a meeting of the full council, where she promised to promote Salford and support its continuing regeneration agenda, which is taking place at the quays and the central district, as well as in Swinton, Langworthy and Broughton.
"What makes me particularly proud is the fact that this massive regeneration is not being forced upon us," she told fellow councillors.
It is our choice to modernise this magnificent city of ours. We want to create an equally proud future and the regeneration we see around us is a symbol of our intent."
During her year of office, Ms Burgoyne will support three charities – the Salfordian Trust, the Diana Children's Community Nursing Service and St Ann's Hospice.
Her appointment comes as the former mayor of Trafford, Dr Pauleen Lane, is suing her council employers for sex discrimination after she was banned from using the civic car for a month because she breastfed her son during working hours.
