Football used to encourage recycling

01/06/2006

With the World Cup less than two weeks away, Manchester City Council is using a football theme to promote recycling in the city.

Yesterday, an enlarged replica World Cup, made from recycled paper, was placed in Albert Square outside the city's town hall.

Young players from the Moston Brook youth football team will take part in a football extravaganza, where they will aim to shoot paper balls into the recycled trophy.

The event aims to inform people in the city about the annual Shotton 'Race to Recycle' competition, which is held at the Bridgewater Hall on June 28th.

Councillor Paul Murphy said: "Manchester City Council has been recycling more and more household waste and we are confident that our rate will improve year on year as new schemes to encourage recycling are introduced."

Craig Robinson, of paper recycling company UPM Shotton, added: "Inspired by Race to Recycle, the people of Manchester are playing a key role in our ambition to recycle 50,000 tonnes of paper each year in Greater Manchester, rising to 100,000 tonnes by 2010.

The sponsors of the Race to Recycle, UPM Shotton, is a company situated in Deeside, 8 miles from Chester and 35 miles from Manchester.
