Fractured-skull baby 'ignored by Tameside medical staff'
15/06/2007
A baby who was taken to Tameside General Hospital with a fractured skull had to wait for an hour and a half without assistance from doctors or nurses.
According to the eight-month-old's parents, James was taken to the hospital after falling from a table and hitting his head.
However, after 90 minutes without medical aid, the parents took him back home and called NHS Direct, which advised that he be taken back to A&E.
This time James was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital, where it was discovered he had a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage.
He was transferred to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Pendlebury and his since undergone emergency life-saving surgery for a blood clot on his brain.
A spokesman for the hospital said: "We would like to apologise to the family of James Stanton for the distress they have suffered and assure them this matter is being urgently investigated."
Doctors have told the parents that it could be months before they can assess whether James has suffered any brain damage as a result of his injury.
