GMP launch summer crime crackdown

27/06/2008

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have launched Operation Hydrofoil in an effort to tackle an expected rise in crime over the summer.

Licensed premises suspected of selling alcohol to under-age drinkers will be targeted in the new crackdown, while people found selling knives to under-18s could face up to six months in prison or a £5,000 fine.

During the evenings, special units - including firearms officers, dog handlers and mounted officers - will police areas that are well known for violence.

Chief Superintendent Steven Hartley said he is committed to making the city-region a safer place.

"We have had considerable success with operations such as Siren in Bolton and Stand in Tameside that operate at weekends throughout the year," he added.

GMP, which employs 8,167 police officers, 380 special constables, 270 community support officers and 3,769 police staff, are responsible for 500 square miles of the north-west.
