GMP probe city shootings
02/01/2008
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have launched an investigation into the lethal shooting of a man in Manchester on New Year's Eve in an incident which saw two other men injured.
They were in a car on Huxley Avenue, Crumpsall, when a lone gunman, who was on foot, fired shots at them at around 17:30 GMT.
The trio admitted themselves to the North Manchester General Hospital just after 18:00 GMT. One of the men, a 26-year-old, died of his injuries later in the night.
Police said one of the injured men was suffering from a serious injury to his back while the other had been grazed by a bullet. A fourth man, also in the car, was not injured.
A murder investigation has been launched and detectives are asking residents in Crumpsall to come forward with any information.
Since 1999, almost 60 people have been killed by guns in the Manchester area.
According to the Home Office, illegal weapons are most readily available in Manchester and Liverpool.
