Garden roof to be built in Piccadilly
19/09/2007
Manchester City Council has announced plans for a garden in central Manchester, which can only be seen by people in nearby office blocks.
Landscape architect Grant Associates has submitted plans for a 'living roof' garden on top of the pavilion in Piccadilly Gardens.
It will be covered with wildflowers, grasses and plants and will attract insects, butterflies and birds to the city, especially in the summer.
But because the garden is on top of the pavilion, only people who work in high-rise buildings will be able to enjoy the view.
Peter Chmiel, of Grant Associates, said: "We were excited to be asked to submit a proposal for the green roof and are delighted our scheme was selected.
"The roof, which will be visible from some of Manchester's key offices, balances aesthetics with ecology and we hope that this roof will provide valuable habitat to many of the city's indigenous species."
Earlier this week, it was revealed that the roof of the new five-storey BDP Architects, Engineers and Designers office in central Manchester has been designed as a nesting place for rare redstart birds.
