Golf fundraiser for injured rugby man
30/06/2006
Famous sportsmen in the Manchester area played their part in a charity golf tournament recently to raise money for a seriously-injured local rugby player.
Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs and former Manchester City manager Peter Reid, both took part in the Swinton Park Golf Club fundraiser, with the aim of helping 21-year-old Chris McGuirk, reports the Salford Advertiser.
Mr McGuirk was paralysed from the neck down in December playing for his rugby union team De La Salle and needs £200,000 to build a house suitable for his disability needs.
The golf tournament is one of a number of events organised by Mr McGuirk's friends and family in order to raise funds for the project.
Fundraiser John Camilleri told the Salford Advertiser: "All the events have been a success and it never stops surprising us how much the people of Salford are prepared to give towards helping Chris.
"We are currently in discussions with Salford Council about land and houses and in the meantime we are looking at putting Chris up in a rented flat so he can at least be near his friends and family in Salford."
Swinton Park Golf Club can be found on the A580 Manchester to Liverpool road, five miles from Manchester city centre.
