Good cop could save his force millions
15/05/2006
A police sergeant from Greater Manchester has suggested a cost-cutting scheme that could save his force £2 million over the next six years.
Sergeant Matthew Moore's idea, which he conveyed through Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) employee suggestion scheme, is to hold CCTV images on CDs and DVDs and hold on to them for a shorter period of time, reports the BBC.
Previous to Sergeant Moore's notion, images were kept on costly hard drives and set aside for six months.
The GMP believes that by changing systems, the force could save an annual figure of £320,000 for the next six years.
Assistant Chief Constable for the GMP, Rob Taylor told the BBC: "This is an excellent example of what the Force Suggestion Scheme can help to deliver.
"Our staff with the knowledge and commitment to their jobs can make such a difference by recognising how they and we can do things better."
The GMP announced recently that they have reduced burglary in the Manchester area, with 2,272 fewer homes being broken into during the last 12 months.
