Great Manchester Run 2006
02/05/2006
At the end of May, the BUPA Great Manchester Run will take place, incorporating many of Manchester's most prominent landmarks.
Last year, the 10km event, which has been held for the last three years, saw Ethiopian Olympic athlete Haile Gebrselassie break the record for the fastest 10km run in England.
A total of over 25,000 people are due to run on May 21st and BUPA has announced that there were more unsuccessful applicants for the race than there are people running, highlighting the popularity of the event.
The BUPA Great Manchester Run 2006 will feature celebrities, professional athletes and members of the public alike, with some recognisable faces including the soap stars Samia Smith and Sue Johnston.
Communications director for the meeting, David Hart said that the organisers hope that the event can become "the world's premier 10k [run] with live terrestrial television coverage".
Competitor Richard Pattinson, from Chorlton, thinks that the best thing about the Manchester run is the discipline required to compete in it.
"It's just a great Manchester event," he added.
