08/11/2006
A soldier from Greater Manchester has been killed in southern Iraq, it has emerged.
Kingsman Jamie Hancock, 19, who is from Wigan, came under fire at an army base in Basra on Monday.
Mr Hancock, who was from the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, was posted to Iraq two weeks ago.
"It is with deep regret that I have to announce the untimely death […] of Kingsman Jamie Hancock," said his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Hutchison.
"Kingsman Hancock was an energetic and enthusiastic individual who lived for the Army and had a very promising career ahead of him."
His parents, who have requested that their privacy be respected, have said that they are "deeply shocked by the loss of our much-loved son".
A total of 121 British servicemen have now died in Iraq since the coalition invaded the country in March 2003.
Kingsman Hancock is the second soldier from the city-region to die in the conflict.
