Greater Manchester to see motorway improvements
12/06/2006
Traffic in Greater Manchester is set to benefit from a range of new traffic signals on motorway slip roads designed to reduce congestion.
The traffic signals will be placed on slip roads for cars entering motorways to try and prevent 'stop and start' traffic on very busy roads. This is when an already congested motorway is made worse by traffic constantly entering the motorway and adding to the build up.
By having signals to determine when the traffic joins the motorway the overall congestion will be reduced.
The signals will work via sensors placed on the roads and along the carriageway that lead up to junctions with the motorways.
The motorways in Greater Manchester that will benefit will be the M6 J24 which is Northbound, Ashton in Makerfield, the M62 J19 Eastbound, Heywood and the M6 J25 Southbound, Bryn.
The sensors are expected to be put in place in Greater Manchester over the next three weeks and make up three of the ten signals that will be placed in motorway locations right across the north-west.
