Help us catch terrorists, ask GMP
05/03/2007
People in Greater Manchester are being asked to become the eyes and ears of the police as a major counter-terrorism campaign is launched.
In an unprecedented move, the Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) counter terrorism unit is urging residents and workers to pass on any information about suspicious or unusual activity to the authorities.
The month-long campaign, which is also taking place in London, the Midlands and Yorkshire, has as its motto, 'You don't have to be sure. If you suspect it, report it.'
Advertisements in newspapers and on the radio will also form part of the campaign.
Police said that the support of Manchester people is imperative when tackling the terrorist threat in Britain, which has already claimed over 50 lives when the London transport system was attacked in 2005.
Excluding London, the GMP was the first force in Britain to develop its own anti-terrorist unit, which is a team of 24 specialist officers and police staff who take the lead on all terrorist investigations in the city-region.
The confidential anti terror hotline is 0800 789 321.
